In 2015, the UN passed the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an opportunity for countries and societies to take a new path to improve everybody’s lives, leaving no one behind. The Agenda has 17 Sustainable Development Goals, (from now on ODS).

This aims have the peculiarity of urging all the countries ato adopt measures to promote prosperity and protect the planet. Additionally, they recognise that the initiatives to end poverty must go hand in hand with a set of strategies to boost economic growthyand deal with a series of social necessities, such as education, health, social protection and job opportunities, along with climate change and environmental protection.
The SDGs give us an opportunity to develop and implement solutions and technologies coming from the organisations, now that they allow to face the world’s biggest challenges in terms of sustainable development since they cover a broad spectrum of different related issues, such as poverty, health, education, climate change and environmental degradation

The promotion of policies that stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit and employment creation is crucial to motivate sustainable economic growth. The aim is to achieve full and productive employment and decent jobs for all men and women by 2030.
Bearing this premise in mind, Regulation UNE 195006 is remarkable because one of its main pillars is the compliance of ILO’s Work in Fishing Convention (C188), which guarantees adequate work conditions on board of fishing vessels with contracts, minimum salaries, holidays and paid resting time, as well as social security and the crew’s health coverage among other aspects.

The 2030 Agenda perceives the need for societies to demand new governance approaches that allow to gather everybody’s opinion, without discrimination nor exclusion, using innovative methods to fix problems and where all the social actors are co-responsible of the aims to achieve, fighting against corruption. For its part, AENOR’s RTF Certification looks after the sustainable management of European fleets certified through transparent and controlled fisheries agreements which directly and actively contribute to fulfil this latent need.

Partnerships are fundamental to take advantage of the relationship among SDGs, in order to improve its efficiency and repercussion and accelerate the achievement of goals. In this sense, the social aspect of AENOR’s RTF Certification encourages the building of partnerships with different parties (administrations, civil society, business organisations, trade unions, scientists) to adopt responsibility measures.
It is the companies the ones that later on proceed to study each of the SDGs in depth, as well as set their commitments with each of them.
Freezer tuna seiners do an extractive activity that apart from having an impact on the marine environment, it also influences food safety and the crew on board of the vessels. For this reason, regulation UNE 195006 includes all the fundamental requirements that make tuna fishing a sustainable activity regarding its three aspects: economic, social and environmental.
